Farewell Lisa Briggs

After three years at the helm of Wathaurong Aboriginal Co-operative (Wathaurong), Lisa Briggs has made the personal decision to move on from the role of Chief Executive Officer (CEO) effective from Friday 30th July 2021.

Lisa  took on the role of CEO in 2018. In the past three years, Wathaurong has seen extensive growth, both in the number of employment opportunities for our local Aboriginal community members in the region, and service programs delivered to community.

Lisa and the Executive team led the organisation through the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020, while still providing vital support and connection for the Wathaurong community. Our strong partnerships with Barwon Health, Feed Me Bellarine, Western PHN and other key stakeholders enabled Wathaurong to provide much needed targeted Covid response supports directly to our local Aboriginal members through the largest lockdown periods in 2020 and beyond.

Lisa said, “I loved my time at Wathaurong and consider the staff and community my extended family”. “The time is right for me to step away, Wathaurong has an exciting future ahead as the organisation has great leadership across all levels and is in a very strong position, and it is time for someone else to come and lead it through the next journey.”

On behalf of the Wathaurong Board Wendy Brabham, Judy Dalton-Walsh, David Flagg, Shane Clarke and Craig Edwards our organisation and community we thank Lisa for all her hard work and commitment over the past years in bringing the organisation to where it is today. Lisa is a strong leader with passion, enthusiasm and is a fierce advocate for our community. While we will miss Lisa’s leadership, we wish her the best of luck in her new endeavours.

Over the next few months, we will be conducting a search to find a new CEO for Wathaurong. During this transition period, it is our priority to find the best individual to lead and maintain a stable and effective organisation. Simon Flagg will step in as interim CEO as of Monday 2nd August 2021 while the Board conducts the recruitment process for the CEO role. Simon is the current Executive Manager of Corporate Services within Wathaurong.

Simon is a proud Wemba Wemba man and a proud member of the Wathaurong Aboriginal Community. Simon has been connected to Wathaurong his whole life and even started his career as a trainee at Wathaurong in 1996, before moving into the Victorian Public Service.
